AMENDING TITLE 14 OF THE DELAWARE CODE RELATING TO THE DELAWARE TECHNICAL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

WHEREAS, Dr. Orlando J. George, Jr. began his career at Delaware Technical and Community College in 1969 as a mathematics instructor at the Wilmington Campus and then served as department chair, assistant to the campus director, dean of instruction, assistant campus director, and vice president and campus director before becoming the College’s fourth president in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George established the College’s values of providing Delawareans with access, opportunity, excellence, and hope to achieve their dreams through education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George fostered excellence in instruction, technology and student success and demonstrated a commitment to serving the community, creating meaningful partnerships and remaining accountable to stakeholders; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. George’s leadership, Delaware Technical and Community College experienced unprecedented growth in financial aid and Educational Foundation contributions, with students receiving $37 million in financial assistance in 2014; and

WHEREAS, during Dr. George’s tenure, the number of articulation agreements which facilitate students’ transfer from Delaware Technical and Community College to four-year institutions have increased from 10 in 1995 to 144 in 2014; and

WHEREAS, as a result of Dr. George’s leadership, Delaware Technical and Community College now has 65 nationally accredited degree programs, an increase from only 13 in 1995; and

WHEREAS, in partnership with the State of Delaware, Dr. George led a major expansion of the nursing program at all campuses of Delaware Technical and Community College, which resulted in a doubling of the number of nursing graduates in the ten year period from 2003 to 2013; and

WHEREAS, during Dr. George’s tenure, the College was named Community College of the Year by the National Alliance of Business in 1999, as well as having received many other local, regional, and national awards; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George’s strong advocacy for the mission of community colleges and responsiveness to the needs of business and industry positioned Delaware Technical and Community College as an educational leader and a lynchpin in the State’s economic development efforts; and

WHEREAS, Dr. George inspired a culture at Delaware Technical and Community College of making a difference in the lives of others and providing a safe, supportive, nurturing, and caring environment which respects and values people.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:

Section 1. Amend Chapter 91, Title 14 of the Delaware Code by making deletions as shown by strike through and insertions as shown by underline as follows:

§ 9112. Name of campus in Wilmington.

The Wilmington campus of the Delaware Technical and Community College shall be named “Orlando J. George, Jr. Campus”.
