Delaware General Assembly

CHAPTER 349 - STATE OF DELAWARE - EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson will be celebrated on April 13, 1943; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that this 200th anniversary of the birth of a great American Statesman should be celebrated as a day of rededication to the truths which he first proclaimed and established. For more than a century and a half, the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known and revered as the Bill of Rights, of which Jefferson was the spiritual father, have stood as the charter of the liberties of the American people. It is not only a part of the Constitution; it is the soul of that immortal document; and

WHEREAS, there are today, those who would challenge these truths, who would abrogate freedom, create tyranny and destroy the basic American concept that all men are created equal,

NOW, THEREFORE, against such attempts to overthrow their fundamental rights, the American people must stand firm, alike in times of peace as well as in times of war, and I urge that in commemoration of the birth of Thomas Jefferson, all true Americans join, pledging themselves to cherish, maintain and strengthen the principles of this patriot who was the architect of American liberty.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I, Walter W. Bacon, have hereunto set my hand, and have caused the Great Seal of the State of Delaware to be hereunto affixed, this twenty-fifth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-three and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and sixty-seventh.

(GREAT SEAL)

By the Governor:

WALTER W. BACON

WILLIAM J. STOREY, Secretary of State.
