STATE OF DELAWARE

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, Christopher Columbus first set foot in the western hemi sp here on October 12, 1492; and

Whereas, we live in an era of new frontiers opened by the exploration of space and b y scientific and social developm ents offering new dimensions for humanity; and

Whereas, our annual commemoration of the achievements of Christopher Columbus serves to remind us of the proud history which began with his discovery of America 478 years ago; and

Whereas, Title 1, Section 501 of the Delaware Code sets aside October 12 as a legal holiday in the State of Delaware;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim Monday , October 12, 1970, as

COLUMBUS DAY

in Delaware, and pursuant to Delaware Code, Title 1, Section 501, as amended, do hereby designate Monday, October 12, 1970, as a legal holiday in the State of Delaware in observance of Columbus Day. I encourage all residents of The First St ate to mark the day with appropriate ceremonies.

I further request that the American Flag and the Flag of the State of Delaware be flown on all public buildings on this day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the said State to be hereunto affixed at Dover this first day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and seventy, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and ninety-fifth.
