CHAPTER 373 - STATE OF DELAWARE - EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the period of June 11-18 has been designated as Flag Week by the United States Flag Association; and

WHEREAS, the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was written by Francis Bellamy of the Staff of the Youth's Companion, Boston, Massachusetts, and was first used on October 12, 1892, in the observance of the Four Hundredth Anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus; and

WHEREAS, at this time it is appropriate that due recognition be accorded the author of this inspiring pledge to our flag written in the following expressive language: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."; and

WHEREAS, Flag Week coincides with the beginning of the Fifth War Loan Drive to raise vast new sums for the preservation of our liberty and freedom and to keep "Old Glory" proudly waving; and

WHEREAS, we remain exceedingly grateful for the privilege of living in this great land of ours and of paying homage to our National Emblem;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Walter W. Bacon, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim the period

JUNE 11-18, 1944 as

FLAG WEEK

and direct that during this period our Nation's Flag be displayed on all public buildings. And further, I request and urge the people of our State to display the Stars and Stripes at their homes and other suitable places, and to conduct patriotic ceremonies at which they shall re-affirm their allegiance to the principles and ideals symbolized by the American Flag, pledge anew their faith in our country's institutions, and give grateful expression for the Blessings of America.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I, Walter W. Bacon, Governor of the State of Delaware, have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of said State to be hereunto affixed, at Dover, this sixth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-four and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and sixty-eighth.
